Transforming Lives through Provision of clean water.

Climatic Shocks, resulting to prolonged drought in south Central Somalia is associated with severe water scarcity, displacing thousands of populations in search of better livelihoods. With no access to water for drinking, farming, or livestock, families face food shortages and collapsing livelihoods, forcing many to abandon their homes in search of better living conditions.

Maryam Hassan Ahmed, a 31-year-old mother of five from Masiireey village in Wanlaweyn district, vividly remembers the struggles of accessing clean water. “Every morning, I would wake up very early to fetch water from a distant shallow well before going to the market for casual work. Every mother  in the neighbourhood faced the same struggle ,” she recalls.

To alleviate the suffering of mothers like Maryam.HIJRA, in partnership with CONCERN Worldwide, under the BRCiS III Programme, rehabilitated a non-functional shallow well in Masiireey village, Wanlaweyn district. The shallow well now provides the community with hundreds of thousands of gallons of safe drinking water, greatly transforming the communities daily lives. In Wanlaweyn’s agropastoral economy, clean water is essential for human and livestock well-being, ensuring food security and income. The rehabilitation of the shallow well has significantly improved life for Maryam, her family, and neighbours by providing nearby access to safe drinking water, reducing the need for long, hazardous trips for women. Women can now focus on food production and childcare, while the community as a whole benefit from improved livelihoods and resilience to future climatic shocks.
