HIJRA launches its first Hygiene Promotion Trainings in Afgooye

DSC05452To ensure community empowerment and program ownership, HIJRA worked to mobilize and train over 186 community members in its first Hygiene Promotion Workshop held in Lower Shabelle.

The participants, drawn from six IDP camps and 10 Riverine villages, were trained on the five domains of hygiene promotion, latrine rehabilitation, water spout renovation and camp cleaning. The trainings, lead by HIJRA program staff, were designed to ensure beneficiaries proficiency in proper water management, environmental sanitation and hygiene promotion.

“Unfortunately, it is often our own hands that spread contamination. It is very important to wash your hands and protect the water in your homes.” - Dr. Shombe, HIJRA Public Health Specialist, instructs his participants

Drinking water containers should be covered and placed out of reach of young children. For washing, if soap is not available ash can be used. We have to work hard in order to change our behaviors!” he adds.

"This has been a very important trainings for us! I now realize the importance of Hygiene and Hygiene Promotion. We have to change our behavior in order to encourage and promote its activities in our villages.” - Hassan, one of the participants.
