Community Sustainability; Hiring Locally in Afgooye

4To ensure the success of its agricultural programs in Lower Shabelle, HIJRA has worked through the community to develop integrated programs designed to create sustainability and resilience.  To do so, its farming projects provide local income and job creation at each phase of the project cycle.

“For too long people in my community have had no monies to pay for the use of my tractor. I did not know this year how I would be able to feed my family. It is a blessing for us to start to use the tractor again! I still do not believe how lucky we are.  HIJRA, not only rents my tracker but provide monies to others for the hours they use it. I can now put food on my families table!” - Hassan Mohamed, local tractor owner

For the last five years, I could not afford to pay for the trackers to plough my lands and had poor yields. Now, HIJRA has come to assist me and my brothers by paying for the lands to be cleared! I have no doubt now my harvest will be much better! We have all benefited and we will all eat together! ”- Ahmed, local land owner and farmer

“This is the right program at the right time. Our beneficiaries are so joyful! I am proud of this program!” - Mohamed Abdulle, HIJRA livelihood field officer.

HIJRA has been working in to provide assistance in Afgooye since 2004; restarting its agricultural programming in late 2012.
