Business Success; I Can Now Provide My Own Income

Nasro ShareyNasro Sharey is a leader in her community and considered a success among her peers! In the two years since her displacement, she has worked to create a small sustainable business outside of her makeshift shelter in the Oto Oto IDP settlement of Mogadishu.

2 years ago, like many others, when we first came to the camp life was hard. I could not feed, clothe or education my children. In our first weeks, we had to defecate in the open next to our shelters bringing flies and making my children ill. It was in these first months, I had to sell everything including our lands back home to get my children medicines. This is when we truly had nothing.”

"I believe HIJRA saved my life! They came with waters and helped my family by giving us monies to start business and eat. Now I can purchase the minced meats, potato, flour, cooking oil and fire wood to make my samosas with no more handouts! It is still very hard to be away from my village but I feel so happy to be providing educations and food for my children all on my own.” - Nasro Sharey, IDP Oto Oto Mogadishu

“It was during a difficult time that HIJRA began to assist Nasro. The emergency livelihoods program, designed to supplyAbdi Mohamoud - HIJRA livelihood staff beneficiaries with 75 USD, truly helped to make a change for her. I remember she used her first cash distribution to immediately begin making the local foods to sell. We are very proud to see she no longer needs assistance and can provide for her family alone. She is truly a great success.” -Abdi Mohamud, HIJRA Assistant Field Officer
