HIJRA Launches Mobile Cash Programs in Lower Shabelle

DSC05218To assist the most vulnerable, HIJRA with partner OXFAM, have worked to identify 1,000 beneficiaries in Lower Shabelle for the receipt of mobile cash programming.

The livelihoods project, launched through Nationlink telecom, works to support local farming communities through the distribution of mobile phones for the receipt and transfer of funds.

Maleyko Omar, from the Gosha iyo Gendiga village of Afgooye, is mother to five and one of HIJRA’s newest program beneficiaries. “Since my husband got sick one year ago, I have been the one to work on the farm.  It is hard to find work as the farmers give priority to men over women.  I am very excited for this money! This is the first phone I have ever owned!  When I receive the monies, I plan to buy a donkey to pull my cart. I know this will make our lives better. I will have my eldest son handle the donkey cart and transport fruits and vegetables to the markets in Afgooye.”

“This is the first time to get such exceptional assistance. HIJRA is empowering us to stand on our own feet again!” - Asho Abdulle, HIJRA livelihoods program beneficiary, Gosha iyo Gendiga

The livelihoods program is set to make its first distribution in early February 2013.
