Female Empowerment in Somalia; HIJRA distributes Sanitation Kits

DSC04126Today thousands of Female Somalis have been displaced and forced to seek refuge in the capital city of Somalia.  For women, the realities once displaced are often far worse than their male counterparts, having little access to proper health facilities, protection services and basic hygiene materials.

Fatima Mayow, a mother of three young girls, daily faces the worry of where to find sanitary kits for her children. “This is most basic for us. There is no dignity in using tattered filthy fabrics for our personal hygiene. It is shameful not having proper sanitary materials when we are so many child-bearing mothers and young women.”

“We don’t have enough money to buy sanitary kits and even if we have monies for it, it is shameful to go to the shops and ask if kits are for sale” Says Fatima. “This is why it is so important organizations like HIJRA continue to help us by providing these kits. Now we can start to use them with dignity.”

HIJRA currently works to support women and young girls through the provision of sanitation and hygiene materials; conducting campaigns designed to empower IDPs through mobilization and training.
