Water on the Frontlines; Success in Distribution

Resize of DSC01730

To respond to the rapidly growing needs of IDPs in Mogadishu’s 77 IDP settlement, HIJRA with partner OXFAM, worked to construct two elevated T-70 water tanks. The tanks, capable of providing thousands of gallons of clean water per day, have worked to drastically improve the living standards of the population.

Nuurto Elmi, a 31 year-old mother of 5 and current HIJRA program beneficairy, tells us of her struggle to escape the recent offensive in Afgooye, the loss of husband and her current battle to meet the cost of urban living.

“It seems long since we came here from the fighting. We were too happy in Ceelasha then the bullets started again and killed my husband. I feared to stay and have the same happen to my children, so we ran. On the roads here our bus was shot four times, we were lucky to escape. I thought in the camps we would find help and work but instead there was nothing, we even had to pay for waters from the borehole. It cost 2000 shillings a jerrycan. To many days I had to choose between water and food for my children. Now water is free and I don’t have to decide whether we eat or drink. This is truly a blessing!” - Nuurto Elmi, Mogadishu
